Suffolk County Desk Appearance Ticket Lawyer Jason Bassett Explains Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT)

Suffolk County desk appearance ticket lawyer Jason Bassett ( releases a new article discussing what a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) is. The lawyer mentions that in cases where there is probable cause, the police may be able to arrest the suspect, take them to the police station and transport them to court for an arraignment.

According to the Suffolk County desk appearance ticket lawyer, “A Desk Appearance Ticket or “DAT” is a court form that notifies the individual of their upcoming arraignment as well as the date and time that they are to appear before a judge. Typically, the arraignment date will often be several weeks from the date of the alleged crime.”

Additionally, the lawyer says that in cases where people are bound to receive less serious charges, they will be issued a “desk appearance ticket”. Instead of going to the precinct, a person will be given a piece of paper with the date and time that they must appear in court.

The lawyer adds that under any circumstances, the law enforcers are required to issue DATs if the alleged offense can be characterized as a category E felony or misdemeanor. They can also issue it if the person is able to provide identification for the government.

In the new article, the lawyer also enumerates the crimes for which a DAT is usually issued. These crimes include Petit Larceny or Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Harassment in the Second Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Controlled Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, Criminal Trespass.

The lawyer explains that after a person receives a DAT, they are required to show up on their court date. If they fail to do so, they will be issued a “bench warrant”. According to attorney Bassett, “If an individual has an outstanding bench warrant and in any way interacts with a police officer, the individual will be taken into custody. That means if you are stopped even for a traffic ticket, authorities may find you have an outstanding warrant and arrest you.”

Lastly, the lawyer emphasizes how important it is to seek the guidance of a skilled DAT lawyer. Having an experienced lawyer may be able to help the defendant understand their rights and what their next steps should be.
