NitWits Confirms Pets Cannot Catch Head Lice From Their Owners
Years of Experience Treating Clients Proves Head Lice Can Only Survive On Human Host
Belmont, Massachusetts — NitWits, Boston's oldest premier head lice treatment service salon in the Boston area, today released a statement that pets cannot catch head lice from their human owners, squashing a concern that many of their clients that own animals have. The finding is based on the founders' extensive research on the subject, as well as over 15 years of hands-on experience treating thousands of clients.
"It's a common question we receive from clients and families that own pets that are dealing with head lice," said founder Berit Pratt, RN BSN MPH. "But the good news, at least for pets, is that head lice are permanent human ectoparasites which means they can only live and thrive on humans. They have adapted to human hosts and human blood so much that it's impossible for them to survive on other mammals, including cats and dogs."
This means any pet owners with head lice don't have to worry about transmitting them to their pets, nor do they have to worry about pets giving a family member lice. Lice also cannot survive away from a human head. So even though they cannot be transmitted from a human head to a pet through physical contact, if they did they would die rather quickly.
NitWits has been a recipient of The Best of Boston Award since 2004 and is headed by school nurse Pratt and co-founder Sonia Simoun. They and their professionally trained team of lice-removal professionals have successfully treated thousands of Boston-area clients using their line of proprietary products that are organic and pesticide-free.
Pratt is also quick to add that head lice won't be found on objects throughout the home.
"After more than 15 years of successfully ridding families of head lice, we've confirmed that lice are not in your home, bed, car, furniture, clothing, or hats. Many families will overzealously launder their bedding and vacuum their home, thinking that head lice are living and multiplying in sheets and carpeting. Fortunately, that is not the case—they can only live on a human host. In fact, if lice were to hatch in carpeting it would die right away because it needs human warmth and blood to survive."
The NitWits team of professionally trained lice removal experts are available for appointments at their discreet, comfortable Belmont salon. They use a combination of organic head lice removal products and physical combing to safely remove head lice quickly and thoroughly from clients of any age.
