FLO Cycling Releases Podcast About Rolling Resistance

As the wheel turns, the bit of the wheel that is touching the ground is constantly changing, with the back of the contact patch leaving the ground and becoming wheel-shaped, and more of the wheel being flattened at the front of the contact patch. The flattening of the wheel takes more energy than the wheel springing back into place generates, so that entire process causes a small amount of energy loss. Among other things, this shows the reason why keeping wheels and tires properly inflated improves performance, whether that’s the speed of a bicycle being pedaled or the gas mileage of an automobile.
Because of this energy loss from the rolling resistance, it’s very helpful for cyclists to think about how they can optimize their bikes to minimize the amount of energy lost while they are cycling. The most important factor in reducing rolling resistance in a bicycle is tire selection. Tires can be made in a number of different ways, which will change how a wheel performs. They can be made from different kinds of rubber, or use different casings and other materials. There’s several properties a person might want to consider when selecting a tire, such as durability, and how aerodynamic a tire is, and each of these factors can also impact the rolling resistance of a tire. Some very durable tires can withstand all kinds of abuse, but the design decisions that help them be durable lead to very poor rolling resistance.
