Find Addiction Rehabs Announces Guide for ACA Marketplace Coverage for Addiction Treatment

Find Addiction Rehabs, which is based in Boca Raton, FL, is happy to announce that they are releasing a guide for people suffering from addiction on how they can choose an Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan using the Marketplace, based on their need for alcohol or drug treatment, dual diagnosis, substance abuse detox, and more. ACA, which is a component of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, has significantly expanded the scope of treatment by expanding insurance coverage, introduced insurance reforms that take into account substance use disorder (SUD) treatments, and more.

ACA sponsors insurance plans through an online platform that is known as the Health Insurance Marketplace, or simply the Marketplace. It is through the Marketplace that people can apply for coverage on addiction treatment, amongst several other options. Overall, ACA has the goal of increasing health insurance coverage all over the US, categorizing its items and services as “essential health benefits” (EHBs) across 10 categories, which are: ambulatory patient services; emergency services; hospitalization; maternity and newborn care; mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, prescription drugs; rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management; and pediatric services, including oral and vision care.

It is important to note that many private insurance firms do not cover pre-existing medical conditions, which means substance abuse is usually not covered. The ACA does away with the concept that substance abuse is a pre-existing condition, thus allowing addiction treatment to be covered and become significantly more accessible. Insurance plans through the Marketplace can offer coverage for: addiction evaluation; brief intervention; addiction treatment medication; clinic visits; alcohol and drug testing; home health visits; family counseling; and anti-craving medication. The Marketplace coverage can also help with in-patient services, such as a detox program, where the recipient can remain at a health facility during the duration of the treatment. Eligibility for ACA coverage is simple. To be able to enroll, an individual must: not be incarcerated; be a U.S. citizen or national, or be lawfully present; and live in the United States.

There are various levels of ACA coverage and most insurance plans associated with ACA can fit into four different categories, with each one providing a range of payment splits based on the individual’s medical requirements. These are the: Bronze category where the insurance company pays 60 percent and the individual pays 40 percent; Silver category where insurance pays for 70 percent and the individual pays 30 percent; Gold category where insurance pays for 80 percent and the individual pays 20 percent; and Platinum category where insurance pays for 90 percent and the individual pays 10 percent.

The Marketplace coverage offered through the ACA considers substance abuse and mental health as EHBs allowing for better coverage for people suffering from addiction. While there are actually many factors to consider when selecting a health plan that is focused on substance abuse treatment, important points to consider are: inpatient treatment, particularly access to halfway houses and treatment centers; counseling, including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, group counseling, contingency management, and more; and medication for detoxification, relapse prevention medication, anti-withdrawal medication, and more.

A good health plan that can be obtained through the Marketplace should offer help through peer support groups or even international fellowships like Alcoholics Anonymous. This means that a person suffering from an addiction may be able to go to a rehab center and get the necessary treatment without having to pay out-of-pocket or least through a substantial subsidy. It is important to remember, however, that the actual benefits will depend on the state where the person lives in and the specific health plan chosen.

The Marketplace will also offer some protection with regards to the right to behavioral and mental health. For instance, ACA-approved health plans will cover pre-existing conditions and will not apply any spending limits. This means that there will be no extra charge if the person already has substance use disorder.
